 In Chinese culture, stone plays a unique role in both spiritual and tangible realms of daily life, embodying the belief that all lives emerge from the stone. Stones evoke antiquity while water evokes sensations of tranquillity and transcendence. Organised by the Cultural Section, Chinese Embassy in the UK and presented by Gyrecraft & Chizi Space&Local Landscape, the exhibition Maritime Echoes: The Story of Stone recreates a vivid journey that transports visitors from Quanzhou to London, aboard a vessel laden with the gifts from the Orient, stored within the watertight bulkheads. Quanzhou, the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road— is widely known
as the country’s world intangible cultural heritage city. Growing from the sea, this historic city is closely connected with the water and nurtures a unique maritime culture and local craft traditions. Propelled by the historical currents of the Maritime Silk Road, this voyage brings
extraordinary craft traditions and exciting craftsmen, designers, artists, and performers from Sounthern China. It explores the cultural dimensions behind materials, craftsmanship, and local memories through the lens of stone. It incorporates the concept of a shifting ‘sea-place' discovered through "sea-silk" mapping, demonstrating how maritime routes have historically altered the cultural and physical landscapes of Quanzhou. It also delves into how the city's identity has been shaped and reshaped by its interactions with the sea, reflecting on local knowledge, craftsmanship traditions, fisherwomen culture, and envisioning sustainable futures rooted in the traditional medium of stone. Learn more about the cultural importance of this material through the exhibition, which features contributions from 21 creative minds - 10 craftsmen/craftswomen and 11 artists - showcasing 28 artworks alongside 8 commissioned projects. It highlights intangible cultural heritage projects with 2 world-class, 4 national, and 1 provincial project from Southern China.

在中国文化中，石头在精神与物质世界中都扮演着独特的角色，承载着“万物出于石”的生命观。石寓古意，水寓灵性，二者共构出宁静而超越的感官意象。本次展览“海丝回响 · 石头记”由中国驻英国大使馆文化处主办，环流、赤子空间与在地文化联合呈现，旨在再现一段从泉州出发、横渡重洋至伦敦的文化之旅——如同一艘满载东方礼物的古船，穿越时空，借助水密舱格将文化与记忆一一承载。泉州，这座生长于海的城市，是“海上丝绸之路”的起点，亦是中国著名的“世界级非物质文化遗产之都”。它因水而兴，因海而盛，孕育出独特的海洋文化与地方手工艺传统。此次“航程”由海上丝绸之路的历史潮流推动，汇聚了来自中国南方的杰出手工艺人、设计师、艺术家与表演者，以“石”为媒介，展开一场关于材料、工艺与地方记忆的文化探讨。展览通过“海丝地图”的视觉化呈现，提出“海道针经”这一概念，展现海上通道如何深刻改变泉州的文化与地理景观，并深入探讨泉州如何在与海洋的持续对话中不断重塑其城市身份。这一过程不仅体现于手工艺与地方知识的传承中，也体现于渔女文化的延续与当代对可持续未来的思考之中。展览共邀请21位创作者参展，其中包括10位手工艺人和11位艺术家，共展出28件作品及8个特别委托项目，全面呈现中国南方丰富的非物质文化遗产：包括2项世界级、4项国家级及1项省级项目。观众将在此次展览中深入了解石这一传统材料所承载的文化价值与当代意义。

 Under the guidance and support of the Cultural Section of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, the China–Quanzhou Pavilion at London Craft Week 2024 successfully opened at OXO Tower Wharf, a major cultural venue on the South Bank of the Thames. The event was co-curated and produced by GyreCraft, Chizi Space, and Local Landscape, and co-organised by Phoenix Art, with academic support from the Quanzhou Maritime Museum and the Key Research Laboratory for the Maritime Silk Road at Guangzhou University. The exhibition aims to promote cultural exchange and international collaboration between China and the UK through showcasing traditional Chinese craftsmanship and the cultural heritage of the Maritime Silk Road. The exhibition presents 28 works and 8 commissioned projects by 21 heritage inheritors, artists, and designers, spanning diverse forms such as video, photography, calligraphy, sculpture, furniture, and live performance. It features several world-class and national-level intangible cultural heritage items, including Nanyin music and the watertight bulkhead shipbuilding technique of the Fuchuan vessel. During the opening, a Quanzhou hairpin flower ceremony was specially held, highlighting the unique traditional craft of Xunpu flower adornment, which conveyed the aesthetics of the East and told vivid stories of cross-cultural exchange through craftsmanship. Guests attending the opening included: Mr. Yu Guo, First Secretary of the Cultural Section of the Chinese Embassy in the UK; Mr. Huang Guohui, President of the Quanzhou Association and Chamber of Commerce in the UK; Mr. Jiang Shan, travel writer, columnist, and Artistic Director of Local Landscape; Lu Chuan, representative of the producers and curators of Maritime Echoes: The Story of Stone; Ms. Wang Jun and Ms. Zhang Qing, representatives of the new generation of women from Quanzhou and the Xunpu community; Faculty and student representatives from the University for the Creative Arts and the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL; As well as over one hundred guests from the UK’s cultural, artistic, and film sectors.

2024年伦敦手工艺周中国•泉州馆在中国驻英国大使馆文化处的指导和支持下于泰晤士河南岸重要的文化中心OXO TOWER WHARF顺利开幕。这一活动由环GyreCraft、赤子空间和在地文化联合策划出品，凤凰艺术联合主办，获得了泉州海外交通史博物馆和广州大学海上丝绸之路重点实验室的学术支持。展览旨在通过展示中国传统手工艺和海上丝绸之路的文化遗产，推动中英间的文化交流和国际合作。展览汇集了21位非遗传承人、艺术家和设计师的28件作品及8个委托项目，涵盖影像、摄影、书法、雕塑、家具和现场表演等多种形式，展示了包括南音和水密隔舱福船制造技艺在内的多项世界级和国家级非物质文化遗产。开幕期间，还特别举办泉州簪花活动，还通过蟳埔簪花这一独特手艺，向世界传递了中国东方美学，讲述了手工艺背后跨文化交流的精彩故事。中国驻英国大使馆文化处一等秘书于果先生；英国泉州联谊会暨泉州商会会长黄国辉先生；旅行家、专栏作家、在地文化的艺术总监江山先生；“海丝回响.石头记”出品方及策展人代表卢川；新生代泉州及泉州蟳埔女性代表王珺女士和张晴女士；英国创意大学、英国UCL巴特利特建筑环境学院师生代表、英国文化、艺术、电影行业代表等一百多人出席了此次开幕式。

Mr. Huang Wuzhui, an intangible cultural heritage inheritor of traditional shipbuilding from Quanzhou, presents his unique and endangered techniques of Fuchuan watertight bulkhead construction, including fish-scale plank joining and multi-layered hull structures. In the background, photographer Zhu Lanqing’s work The Excavation of a Shipwreck reconstructs the context of a sunken Song Dynasty vessel discovered in 1973 at Houzhu Harbor in Quanzhou Bay. Together, the two works create a cross-temporal resonance between craft and archaeology.

泉州造船非遗传承人黄乌锥先生带来其独特的福船水密隔舱、鱼鳞搭接、多重船板等濒临失传的建造工艺，背景是摄影师朱岚清作品《沉船挖掘记》通过重构语境的方式，还原、考古1973年在泉州湾后渚港发现的宋未沉船，两件作品产生跨时空回响。

Wang Xinxin transcribes traditional Gongche notation by hand, sets ancient poetry to music, and brings it to life through her own pipa performance and vocal interpretation.

Crafting the beauty of Oriental floral hairpins against the backdrop of the Thames Rivers

泉州蟳埔簪花，点亮泰晤士河畔向世界传递中国东方美学，讲述手工艺背后跨文化的流动故事


During the exhibition, two nationally recognized items of China’s intangible cultural heritage were specially showcased — the traditional attire of Hui'an women and the customs of Xunpu women. The exhibition featured traditional garments from the Xiaozuo area of Hui’an and a series of accessory pieces by Mr. Wang Yongyue, a representative inheritor of Xunpu women’s customs, as well as Oriental floral hairpins created by Ms. Huang Shu from the Xunpu fishing village in Quanzhou — all of which became a major highlight of the event. Oriental floral hairpins are part of the unique "zanhua wei" tradition from the Xunpu fishing village, located at the confluence of river and sea in Quanzhou. Ms. Huang has been making fabric flowers for nearly 40 years. Driven by her passion for the craft and childhood observations, she sparked a local trend in Xunpu with her distinctive fabric floral hairpins. Ms. Huang’s mother was one of the few female crew members in the village who went out to sea. Due to the physically demanding nature of offshore work, many Xunpu fisherwomen had little time or energy to adorn themselves. With her exquisite craftsmanship, Ms. Huang became the go-to artisan for making flowers used in local folk events, festive celebrations, and daily rituals.

展览期间，特别展出了两项中国国家级非物质文化遗产项目—惠安女服饰和蟳埔女习俗。包括惠安女小岞服饰和蟳埔女习俗代表性传承人王勇跃先生的系列配饰作品，以及泉州蟳埔渔村的黄淑女士的簪花作品，成为展览的一大亮点。簪花是泉州江海交界处的蟳埔渔村独特的“簪花围”习俗，手艺人黄淑女士制作布花近四十年，凭借对布花制作的热爱和儿时的观察，创造了蟳埔当地的布花簪花风潮。黄淑女士的母亲是蟳埔渔村少数能够跟船出海的女性船员，长期出海和繁重的体力劳动使得许多蟳埔渔女难以有精力打扮自己。黄淑女士以其精湛的布花手艺，成为渔村民俗活动、节日庆典及日常祭祀用花的首选制作人。
